Ninth Ward marks the beginning of Jewell’s career in writing for children (fingers crossed!). Though technically speaking she wrote her first children’s book, entitled The Last Scream, at the age of eight, she didn’t get around to writing another until fifty years later, when Lanesha, the narrator of Ninth Ward, started speaking.
She feels honored and blessed that Ninth Ward waas selected as one of the “Best Books of 2010″ by School Library Journal, received a Parents’ Choice Foundation Gold Award, the Coretta Scott King Author Honor Award, and the 2011 Jane Addams Peace Association Honor Award. Ninth Ward was also featured on Al’s Book Club for Kids. Jewell even did an interview on the Today Show!
